The Reverse Room is an art installation created by Foscarini and architect James Wines, with his daughter Susan Wines, for Milan Design Week 2018. At Foscarini Spazio Brera, in a room with dark walls, upside-down and obliquely tilted, furnished by monochrome tables and chairs, the table lamps peer down from the ceiling, while the hanging fixtures sprout from the floor with the aim of challenging our perception of spaces and our responses to environmental stimuli and conventions.

The collaboration between Foscarini and architect James Wines dates back to more than thirty years ago, with “Table Light / Wall Light”, a work produced by the company with Wines’ SITE group in 1991 for the cultural areas of the exhibition “Abitare il tempo”, in Verona.

Today, that work evolves in the project of a signature collection, the “Light Bulb Series”, composed of a number of pieces in numbered limited editions: a precious collection, due to the story it tells and the thinking it conveys. Lamps and objects that make their debut at Foscarini Spazio Brera, in the context of the installation designed by Wines.

Starting with the form of a classic light bulb, Wines organises his reflections around the main themes that have guided his architectural research, based on human responses to the surrounding environment and actions that influence them. The light bulbs are transformed from objects of consumption to works of blown glass, disrupting expectations: they melt, crack and split, they are inverted, become black or are invaded by nature. They embody all those states of “architectural defect” that make it possible to break free of any academicism, to rethink reality, giving it form and, at the same time, dissolving its boundaries.

At Foscarini Spazio Brera (Via Fiori Chiari 28/Pontaccio 19), Foscarini will also present other new product developments, alongside the collection created by James Wines. From 17 to 22 April, don’t miss the Reverse Room at the Brera Design District and the Milan Design Week 2018.
