Home Design Projects To Keep Your Kids Entertained

With many of us spending a lot of time indoors over the coming months you’ve probably started thinking about home improvements. But when you’ve got kids around it can be harder to get bigger projects underway. We take a look at a few simple home design projects that you can get your kids involved with to help keep them entertained.

Redesign your kid’s bedroom

Your kid’s bedroom is somewhere they spend a lot of time playing, sleeping, and learning — so a great place to start with your home design projects is letting them redesign their room. By getting them involved with updating their room you can really make it reflect their interests and style, making it feel like a space that’s completely their own.

Sit down with your kids and get them to tell you or write down all the ideas they have. You could even draw out a plan of the room so that they can pick the layout. Let your kids choose a theme for their room whether it’s their favourite book, characters or something more general like a jungle or the ocean. They can then pick colours, furniture, and decorations to match the theme.

While it’s still important to choose some practical bits like plenty of storage to keep things tidy, you can still get the kids involved with choosing which furniture they have. Find some functional and affordable storage furniture from somewhere like Furniturebox; choose bits that are bigger than you currently need because as they grow they’ll need even more space. And then let them pick out one of two fun pieces like one of these Circu beds.

Try setting up one area in their room that’s for playing so that you can keep the mess altogether in one place. And incorporate lots of fun but educational elements — you could create a chalkboard wall for them to draw on or put up interactive posters. By working together to decorate your kid’s bedroom you’ll keep them entertained for hours and create a space that’s engaging and fun for them.

Create a feature wall

Choose one wall in your home that your kids can decorate as a feature wall. Let them pick out the colours and any designs or patterns. You can find lots of simple wall stencils at Cutting Edge Stencils, that are quick and easy to use with no mess.

Alternatively, just outline a simple image such as mountains, a sunset, or flowers and let your kids paint it. Put dust sheets down and remove any furniture, but let them take charge of the painting (if they’re old enough) — you can always fix any mistakes later. You could also pick out two or three frames and set your kids a project to create pictures for them. Either set a theme to match the colour or room, or just let them choose exactly what they want to make.

Update old furniture

Another good home design project to keep your kids entertained is updating old pieces of furniture to give them a new lease of life.  One of the quickest and easiest ways to update furniture is with spray paint for wood, but it can be quite messy so set your kids up outdoors. Choose an old piece of furniture like a wooden chair or table, and let them choose new paint — you could paint the tops and the legs different colours, and then add any other decorations that they want. You’ll have to help them with preparation if the furniture needs sanding first, but then you can let them loose with the paint and transform your old furniture.
