On April 23rd, the Dukes of Cambridge welcomed a new member to the Royal Family, Prince Louis. The world stopped when the traditional town crier announced the birth of baby Prince Louis, and expectation grew surrounding the child’s name. It was later announced that the newborn prince’s name was Louis Arthur Charles, all of those three names were the most likely to be picked, according to the betting houses. Bottom line is a new member of the royal dynasty was born, and we couldn’t be happier. Furthermore, earlier this week, Kate Middleton and Prince William, with the Kensington Palace, released the first official portraits (aka Instagram pics) of their new son. And they’re as cute as they can be!
The name is a tribute to Prince Charles’ beloved great-uncle Lord Louis Mountbatten. He was a close adviser to the prince and introduced the Queen to Prince Philip. Lord Mountbatten was murdered aged 79 by the IRA, who planted a bomb on a boat at his summer home in Mullaghmore, Ireland, in August 1979. The middle name of Arthur is thought to be a nod to the legendary King Arthur and is also one of William and Charles’ middle names. It was also a middle name of King George VI – the Queen’s father. Charles is a sweet nod to William’s dad Prince Charles and could also be a reference to King Charles I and King Charles II.
As above, the first photo shows baby Louis doing his baby thing in some very crisp and very clean white knitwear. A second shot features him getting a big kiss from his big sister Princess Charlotte — this shot apparently taken on Charlotte’s third birthday earlier this week, in lieu of new photos of her (which were not released on May 2nd, to some consternation).

Prince George doesn’t feature in any of these shots, thus he already did it once, when his little sister Charlotte was born.
That said, the cardigan Charlotte is wearing for her photo with Louis appears to be the same one George wore in a photo to mark his great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday back in 2016. Knitwear, it’s always a solid investment!
As has been the case with many photos of the royal children, their mom Kate Middleton served as the photographer for these new pictures. Don’t expect much more face time from Louis in the near future though — while his older siblings will almost certainly both feature in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s upcoming wedding, he’ll have the day off.
